Driving on Kauai, the easy way
Roads here are simple but unhurried. A few local habits keep your drives safe, scenic and stress-free.
One road, no loop
Kauai's highway hugs the coast and dead-ends on each side — there's no road around the island. Plan one region per day.
Slow for one-lane bridges
The north shore has historic one-lane bridges. Yield to oncoming cars, follow the locals' lead and never stop on a bridge.
Respect the rain
Quick showers keep Kauai green and roads can puddle fast. Ease off the gas and never cross a flooded stream or low-water crossing.
Watch for chickens & nene
Wild chickens are everywhere and you may meet a protected nene goose crossing the road. Drive relaxed and expect the unexpected.
Fuel up before the far sides
Gas stations thin out toward the west side and north shore. Top off in Lihue, Kapaa or Waimea before a big drive.
Never leave valuables in the car
Smash-and-grab break-ins happen at trailheads and beaches. Take valuables with you and leave the car visibly empty.
Paved public roads only
Our vehicles — SUVs included — are built for sealed public roads. Driving on sand, dirt, or unimproved 4x4-only roads (like the rough track to the end of Polihale) isn't covered and can leave you stuck. When the pavement ends, park and explore on foot.
