The one main road
Kauai has a single coastal highway that runs from the north shore around to the west side — but it doesn't form a loop. Both ends dead-end, so you'll backtrack through Lihue between regions. Plan your days by area to minimize driving.
Distances look short on a map but take longer than you'd expect; the island rewards an unhurried pace.
One-lane bridge etiquette
The north shore beyond Hanalei has several historic one-lane bridges. The local rule: if a car is already on or approaching the bridge, yield. Once traffic flows, 5–7 cars cross together before the other side goes. A friendly wave is customary.
Never stop on a bridge for photos — pull over safely instead.
What's allowed in your rental
Our vehicles are made for Kauai's paved and officially maintained roads — from Waimea Canyon's lookouts to Hanalei. Off-roading on unmaintained trails (such as the sand road to Polihale) is not covered by the rental agreement.
Drive to conditions, watch for rain on mountain roads, and never leave valuables visible at trailheads.
